PROJECT DETAILS

Gary’s signature project, a selection of 28 individually designed villas. Samujana is located in the north east of the resort island of Koh Samui. The site has almost 90m of elevation from beach front to summit of the hill. Gfab have designed 28 villas each tailored to its unique topographical conditions and the requirements of the individual owner. Villas are partially cut into the hillside and make use of dramatic rock outcrops and mature trees which become an internal feature of each villa. Constructed over 9 years, the project truly is one of the defining architectural masterpieces of SE Asian resort living.

PROJECT DETAILS

Situated on the outskirts of a Greg Norman designed golf course in Bali, Indonesia. The site overlooks a steep gorge with a fast flowing river running beneath it. Major temples are located adjacent to the property and we have sited the building so that all of these features can be appreciated. The building, due to its semi buried nature, presents minimum impact in the surrounding landscape. All materials were sourced within 5km of the site. Pools and planter roofs ensure the building is kept cool with limited demand on mechanical ventilation. Design and construction 2004-05.

PROJECT DETAILS

Primary residence of an active retired couple set on a dramatically sloping site which drops to a fast flowing river. The house is entered from the top of the site via a small private road which enters into a large gravel court dominated by a vast reflecting pool. Mature trees were maintained and help provide much needed shade. The house is really an exercise in landscape contouring. Accommodation is grouped around a series of garden courtyards which provide through ventilation and double aspect for its living areas. Rooms form a series of terraces which traverse the steep site whilst their roofs provide landscape and terraces for the rooms above. Design and Construct 2008-2009

PROJECT DETAILS

Combining cutting edge architecture and luxurious interiors, Celadon, finished only in 2012, provides a unique family home for a Provence based English family. The design responds to recent planning laws (which stipulate that a designated percentage of the accommodation must be under a pitched roof) by proposing a fabric roof made from PTFE; a first in the country. The pool wraps around 2 sides of the open living area allowing maximum appreciation of the views. Wherever possible mature trees were maintained and terraces formed on the roofs of rooms on the lower floors in contrast to the sloping site.

PROJECT DETAILS

Long established as one of the premier homes in South East Asia, Gary made many ultra exclusive changes to the villa during 2007/2008, which have been recognised globally as best in class design and finish. Originally built in a very traditional style but sadly, due to poor planning, did not function well and despite the lavish materials and budget, became dated and tired. Gfab were commissioned to refit and extend the villa and give it a new lease of life. What remains of the old villa is little more than its roof. In addition to the cosmetic aspects of the job, Gfab used this opportunity to address all the problems with the original design and reduce its energy consumption. In effect, creating a whole new villa beneath its original canopy plus added new ancillary spaces such as commercial kitchen, spa, games/children’s wing and a 21st century version of the traditional bale perched on the cliffs edge.

PROJECT DETAILS

A redesign of a colonial era Government building in Siam Reap, the FCC Hotel has 55 rooms and suites, all sympathetic to the original building whilst adding Gary’s signature contemporary ethos to it’s finish. The site is strategically located next to the Royal Palace and overlooking the river which winds through Siem Reap. Initially, a derelict police station from the period of French colonial occupation was extensively altered and extended (very little beyond the façade was maintained). A series of interventions in the landscape were made to attempt to draw spaces together including reflecting pools, screening walls and strategic lighting. Custom furniture was designed by GFAB and fabricated in neighbouring Vietnam. Finished in stages 2006-2013
